Prestressed concrete bridge tested to failure: the Alveo Vecchio viaduct case study

Abstract The number of bridges approaching or exceeding their initial design life has been increasing dramatically. Meanwhile, are withstanding an ever-increasing traffic volume, both in and weight vehicles. Analytical numerical models can predict bridges’ response to loads ultimate capacity with low uncertainties; however, such uncertainties increase as age due deterioration mechanisms. Non-destructive tests material specimens full-scale load allow for updating structural predicting responses higher accuracy. On-site different levels provide information on the bridge behaviour (e.g., elastic response, first-crack load, capacity), which impact model differently. This paper compares observed Alveo Vecchio viaduct, a prestressed concrete (PC) subjected controlled test up its failure, predicted provided by four models. is measured extensive health monitoring system, while developed refinement uncertainty input parameters. study gives insight into load-carrying existing PC during whole failure. results show that load-carry viaduct almost times than load; likely, many other Italian highway similar characteristics have capacity.
